Medela Swing Maxi™ – Double Electric Breast Pump – £250.00
What’s new?
The Medela Swing Maxi™ provides an update on previous Medela designs. It features a USB type C connector – which charges faster compared to the micro-USB port – and once fully charged the pump will go for up to six sessions before needing recharging.
To go with the improved mobility, it is also quieter than the previous generation of pumps.
It’s a double pump which means it takes half the time to pump, and is proven to produce up to 18% more milk. It also has a PersonalFit FlexTM Breast Shield for increased comfort and two sizes are included with the pump for a better fit.
First Impressions of the Medela Swing Maxi™
Ok, so this is the third Medela pump that I have used and one of my favourite things about them is that they are so easy to put together. There are clear instructions but you almost don’t need them as assembly is incredibly simple. This in my experience, is a great departure from other breast pumps I have used. One notable sleep-deprived experience involving me swearing voraciously at a pump because I couldn’t work out how to put it back together again. Even my partner, who approached putting it together very nervously (probably remembering me mouthing off) was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to assemble.
In turn, this means its easy and quick to disassemble and clean.
Similarly, the usage is incredibly easy to figure out. It has 2-phase expression technology to mimic baby’s natural sucking rhythm, and the strength is fully adjustable, with the ability to skip straight to the second step when needed.
The Medela Swing Maxi™ charges via a USB type C connector and again this is super easy to figure out. The pump has a light system that indicates the level of charge, when it needs charging, when its on and when on standby. I was impressed with how quickly it charges, as well as the length of the charge. The warning light flashes red when the battery is running low so I’ve never been surprised by it running out mid-pump!
One thing I was particularly impressed with was that it comes with two different sized flanges. This is great as you need the pump to fit well to be at its most effective. I’ve always found the Medela flanges to be a great fit as they have a certain amount of flex to them. I also use their Easy Expression bustier to ensure a hands-free pumping session.
Using the Medela Swing Maxi™
I’ve been using this breast pump on average twice a day for over a month now. Honestly – I will never go back to using a single pump ever again. Combined with the Easy Expression bustier, being hands free and not tethered to a plug socket is fantastic. Especially as I now have a baby and a three-year-old to run around after! Whilst yes, you can’t do everything with two bottles dangling off your nipples, with your hands free it is so much easier to fit pumping into your day.
I can’t comment if I express more milk or not as the pump claims – however I certainly express a good amount a lot quicker than I was doing with a single pump. The flanges fit well, and overall, it’s a really comfortable experience.
In terms of the volume, it makes a noise – all pumps do that but its not obtrusive. If you are resting it on a table or hard surface just ensure you put something soft underneath the pump.
I really like the simplicity of it. It is as easy as possible to use and there is also everything you need in one handy kit. The bottles come with lids, and bottle stands, which is an added bonus. The only thing I would comment is that it might be handy if an actual bottle and teat was included. Personally, we don’t use Medela bottles, but it would make it even simpler for those that do wish to try them to be able to do so alongside such a fantastic breast pump.
Would I recommend it?
You might have already guessed from this review but YES, I absolutely would. Its great for everyday use. It’s light and compact enough that you could pack it for a trip away, and I love the ease of it being cordless.
Whatever your breast pumping needs are, occasional, every-day, full-time or just something for a one-off use I would highly recommend the Medela pumps. Each one I have used has been brilliant quality, easy to use, and always expressed the milk efficiently!
Have you tried any Medela pumps before? If you have any questions about the pump, or breastfeeding/expressing in general please just ask in the comments!
